No Decline in Overall Youth Tobacco Use Since 2011

Overall tobacco use by middle and high school students has not changed since 2011, according to new data published by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products in an April 14 Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Data from the 2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey show that 4.7 million middle and high school students were current users (at least once in the past 30 days) of a tobacco product in 2015, and more than 2.3 million of those students were current users of two or more tobacco products. Three million middle and high school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2015, up from 2.46 million in 2014. See the full release to learn about the report.

The Harris Poll Names 2016 Brands of the Year

The Harris Poll on April 20 released its 28th annual EquiTrend Study, revealing the strongest brands in nearly 100 categories across the media, travel, financial, automotive, entertainment, retail, restaurants, and household industries, based on consumer response. Measuring brands’ health over time, the EquiTrend Brand Equity Index is comprised of three factors – Familiarity, Quality and Purchase Consideration – that result in a brand equity rating for each brand. Brands ranking highest in equity receive the Harris Poll EquiTrend “Brand of the Year” award for their respective categories. This year, more than 97,000 U.S. consumers assessed more than 3,800 brands across nearly 500 categories. See the full release to see the list of top brands.

Smithsonian Collects Hispanic Advertising History

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will add materials and advertising artifacts from AHAA: The Voice of Hispanic Marketing’s 2000 VOTO Campaign. The donation – made during the annual conference in Miami April 19 – continues a collecting initiative established in 2015 to assist the museum in telling the story of Hispanic advertising history. VOTO was a pro bono, non-partisan campaign designed to increase Latino voter registration and participation during the 2000 presidential election and to demonstrate the growing importance of the Hispanic market. “In this presidential election year, the VOTO campaign reminds us that diversity and participation are key to understanding the American experience, and the tagline ‘If you don’t choose, someone else will do it for you’ is as fresh today as it was in 2000,” said Kathleen Franz, the museum’s business history curator. See the full release to learn more.

Work Email Is a Waste, 17% of the Time, Execs Say

Workers wondering where their time goes should look at how they manage emails, new research suggests. In a Robert Half survey, chief financial officers (CFOs) said 17% of the time they spend on work email is wasted. While spam is the primary culprit, according to 39% of respondents, the research identified other distractors, including being copied on irrelevant emails, as well as wading through rambling messages and those that could be better delivered another way. See the full release to learn more about how executives feel about email.
