Blog Profiles: Outdoor Blogs

With the first day of Spring already in the rear-view mirror and Earth Day fast approaching (April 22), it seems appropriate to pump the brakes and take a few minutes to appreciate the wonders of nature.

In the spirit of Spring and anticipation of warm weather, these blogs are about enjoying the great outdoors and planning the perfect adventure.

1. Just a Colorado Gal

Heather Balogh Rochfort, the adventurer behind this blog, began her career as an associate editor for a local magazine in Boulder, Colo.

But Rochfort quickly learned that a desk job was not for her, and the outdoors called her to explore. Once she saved up enough money, Rochfort quit her job and hit the road.

To name just a few of her expeditions – Rochfort’s lived on three continents, rode her bike from Boulder to Miami, and traveled to 27 countries.  Through sharing her experiences on her blog, she hopes to encourage other women to get outside and fall in love with nature.

To get better acquainted with Rochfort and her voyages, I explored the Start Here section of her blog, where she highlights some of her notable trips and tips, complete with hero images that inspire envy and wanderlust.

Rochfort has a specific tab on her blog with her recommended Must-Have Gear for backpacking, hiking, or other outdoor activities. This section is for anyone who wants to embark on a trip, but is unsure of what to pack.

2. The Expert Vagabond

Meet Matt Karsten , The Expert Vagabond.

Why vagabond?

Karsten spent the last six years of his life, wandering nomadically from place to place and living a carefree lifestyle. This is the living definition of a vagabond.

With the goal of “becoming wealthy with new experiences,” Karsten saved his money, sold his car, and bought a plane ticket to Guatemala in 2010.

The original plan was to travel for a year. Six years later, he’s still trekking about the globe and discovering hidden gems.

If you only have a few minutes to spare, I recommend checking out the “Best Of” section of Karsten’s blog, where he includes his favorite posts from adventure travel, photography, road trips, funny stories, underwater adventures, and more.

In the “Travel Resources” tab, Karsten lays out how to travel on a budget and get the most out of your dollar. A good adventurer starter pack can be found in his Travel Gear Guide, which includes a list of gear, clothing, and electronics essential for the road.

3. The Big Outside

A former editor and gear reviewer with Backpacker Magazine, Michael Lanza created this blog to share his first-hand knowledge of outdoor adventures, and to inspire other parents to plan family trips. Check out his recommended Top 10 Family Adventures for hiking and national parks vacation ideas with something for every member of the family.

Lanza’s blog also has extensive gear reviews, covering everything from the right backpack or tent for the trip, to recommendations for the best kids outdoor gear.

In his “Ask Me” section, Lanza takes questions from his readers and gives advice about topics like the Must-do Dayhikes in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and How a Small Woman Can Find a Backpack that Fits.

If you’re planning a trip and unsure where to start or if you need some solid reviews on types of gear, The Big Outside has everything to ensure a successful and well-prepared journey.

4. Outdoors Geek

This blog prides itself on being “your number one resource for all things camping and backpacking,” and with its extensive outdoor gear reviews and its Rent it, Try it, Buy it program, it certainly delivers on its promise.

With the largest supply of rental camping gear in the world, a “Try It” program that allows you to test products before shelling out cash, and an outdoors blog section, Outdoors Geek is a must-have resource for camping, hiking, and backpacking enthusiasts.

But if roughing it isn’t your thing, don’t worry – Outdoors Geek has a place just for you.

Glamping, or when you can’t decide between a resort vacation and roughing it, is the new way to camp. Think of it as a more luxurious version of camping: Everything you want from a resort vacation, but accommodations in a large, glamorous tent. Get all of your glamping needs here.
