Blog Profiles: Consumer Electronics Blogs

Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, we select a topic and handful of blogs that do a great job contributing to the conversation. As CES just wrapped, this week’s roundup is dedicated to consumer electronics blogs. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tweet our writers at @BeyondBylines.

Consumer Electronics Blogs

You’re likely aware that the Consumer Electronics Show just wrapped in Las Vegas.

It’s only one of the most important tradeshows dedicated to consumer electronics and high tech.

Today, we’re celebrating CES coverage and some of the great blogs that keep us informed of awesome new gadgets.

1. Engadget

Engadget thoroughly covered CES and even had its stream, “Live from our CES stage.”

“Engadget is the original home for technology news and reviews,” the site says. “Since our founding in 2004, we’ve grown from an exhaustive source for consumer tech news to a global multimedia organization covering the intersection of technology, gaming and entertainment.”

It shows.

There are so many things to see on this site. Some goodies to dive into include FCC Commissioner Clyburn talks about net neutrality at CES, Presenting the Best of CES 2018 finalists!, and Gaming laptops are cheap and portable at CES 2018.

2. Cool Mom Tech

Cool Mom Tech features the “coolest apps, gear, games + tech tips.”

The site has two publishers, Liz Gumbinner and Kristen Chase. It covers a host of material, including gift guides, holidays, kids, babies, teens, food & drink, living, style & beauty, and tech.

Notable posts include Editors Top 10 of the Year: What Wowed us in 2017, Recharge with these 5 fantastic self-care apps in 2018, and 5 free journal apps to harness your thoughts in 2018.

Says contributor Ellyn Exley Dvorkin in the 5 free journal apps piece: “Keep track of your thoughts, and maybe tackle a New Years’ resolution, with these 5 free journal apps. They’ve made it so, so easy to track your daily highs (and lows), even add photos and video like a virtual baby book, which is smart for your bigger kids too. You seriously won’t believe the features these free apps offer. And did you know that journaling can actually help you sleep? Yes, please!”

3. BGR

BGR, also known as Boy Genius Report, is an online place for news and commentary focused on mobile and consumer electronics.

“BGR started as a column written by Internet personality Jonathan Geller on the popular consumer electronics blog Engadget,” the site says. “Geller, known only as ‘Boy Genius’ at the time, quickly rose to Internet stardom as he became one of the biggest draws on Engadget. At age 19, Geller spun off his column into a website devoted to bringing exclusive mobile and gadget news to the masses — and Boy Genius Report was born.”

I really like this site. Some recent posts that caught my eye include Researchers discover bizarre ‘Hypatia’ stone is made from material not found in our Solar System, Google just acquired a startup that transforms screens into speakers, and The 10 most exciting announcements so far from CES 2018.

4. How-To Geek

Imagine a site for geeks, created by geeks. That’s How-To Geek.

“We are an online tech publisher, dedicated to explaining the “hows” and the “whys” of today’s technology and news,” it says. “With a reach of over 15 million readers worldwide, we are committed to putting technology into context for everyone, from regular people to geeky technophiles.”

First, I have to give props to the “Did You Know” bit of trivia on the home page. A recent one: “Thomas Edison experimented with thousands of materials when searching for the perfect light bulb filament–including beard hair from a friend.”
