Johnson & Johnson announced on Sept. 23 the launch of its large-scale, pivotal, multi-country Phase 3 trial (ENSEMBLE) for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, JNJ-78436735, being developed by its Janssen Pharmaceutical Cos. The initiation of the ENSEMBLE trial follows positive interim results from the company’s Phase 1/2a clinical study, which demonstrated that the safety profile and immunogenicity after a single vaccination were supportive of further development. These results have been submitted to medRxiv and are due to be published online imminently.

Scripps Creates National Television Networks Business with Acquisition of ION Media

E.W. Scripps Co. will buy national broadcast network ION Media for $2.65 billion, combining the business with Scripps’ Katz networks and Newsy to create a full-scale national television networks business. ION reaches more than 100 million homes through over-the-air and pay TV platforms and has consistently achieved annual revenue growth and EBITDA margins well beyond industry averages. In addition, this highly accretive acquisition will yield $500 million in synergies, most of which are contractually based, over the next six years.

Chipotle’s Carne Asada is Back on the Menu

Chipotle Mexican Grill announced on Sept. 22 it is bringing back Carne Asada to restaurants across the U.S. for a limited time. The premium steak option will also return to the menu in Canada and make its debut in France, where it will become Chipotle’s first new protein introduced in the European market. Chipotle’s Carne Asada is grilled fresh in small batches, seasoned with a blend of signature spices, hand cut into tender slices, and is finished with fresh squeezed lime and hand-chopped cilantro. The protein is officially approved for the Whole30 program and is compliant with keto and paleo diets.

New Election Models from The Economist Show Democrats with a 68% Chance of Winning Senate and 99% Chance of Holding House of Representatives

On Sept. 23, The Economist launched its first prediction model for elections to the U.S. Senate (economist.com/senatemodel2020), as well as an updated version of its forecasting system for the House of Representatives (economist.com/housemodel2020). The Economist’s models give the Democrats a 68% chance of winning the Senate majority and a 99% chance of holding the House.
