Pinners Conference & Expo

A full slate of these events for DIYers, crafters, photographers, and other creatives is available for 2024. The Pinners Conference schedule will kick off in February in Overland Park, Kansas, and make its way around the country, ending in Scottsdale, Arizona, in November. Check out the full schedule to see which city and date work for you.

January 2024

January: Crime Coverage Summits

Going beyond “if it bleeds, it leads,” this will be the first of two Crime Coverage Summits, hosted The Radio Television Digital News Association, in January to help TV newsrooms think critically about their reporting on the criminal justice system. The January 8-10 event will take place in Philadelphia, and a second summit will be held Jan. 17-19 in New Orleans. The Summits will examine “coverage of race and juveniles, gun violence, dealing with police, mental health in your newsroom and more, mixing in training from experts with peer-to-peer sharing and collaboration.”

Jan. 9-12: CES

CES is “the most influential tech event in the world.” It will be returning to Las Vegas in 2024 for a live, in-person event. More than 3,500 exhibitors from all over the world will meet with hundreds of media attendees to discuss how their innovations are building a better world. The 2024 event’s theme is “All Together. All On.” Sustainability, vehicle technology, VR, AI, space technology, and esports are just a few of the many topics that will be on display.

Jan. 10: Disruptive AI and Blabbing Chatbots: Are You Ready to Fight or Adapt?

This webinar will be hosted by the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Learn how AI could change your writing or editing career, and how to adapt to it. The panel experts will discuss what AI is, how it works and whether writers and researchers can use the tools effectively to brainstorm, research and outline new ideas.

Jan. 11: What You Need to Know About COVID Antivirals

This webinar from the National Press Foundation “aims to help journalists alleviate public confusion and answer pressing questions about access, costs and availability associated with the changes to coverage of COVID-19 antiviral treatments.” A panel of health and medical experts and a leading COVID journalist will answer viewer-submitted questions. As audiences navigate COVID-19 in a “post-pandemic” world, this webinar can be a great learning experience for health and science writers.

Jan. 12: Burnout & Stress: How journalists can manage both in 2024

A stressful year ahead, including a presidential election and the industry’s financial turmoil, means journalists should prioritize their mental health. This webinar from the National Press Club Journalism Institute will cover practical tips and effective methods for journalists and newsroom leaders to address stress and burnout.

Jan. 12-14: Novel Writing Virtual Conference

Looking to make the jump into book writing in 2024? This conference from Writer’s Digest University could be just the event for you. Seven award-winning and best-selling authors will cover the finer points of how to write a novel, including how to select your book topic and the mistakes to avoid. Attendees will also receive valuable feedback on their query letters for literary agents.

Jan. 15-17: Affiliate Summit West

Mass publishers and bloggers alike will head to Las Vegas to attend Affiliate Summit West. Build new partnerships and learn new ways to build traffic to your site. The content tracks include Content & Commerce, Lead Gen, Brand to Brand, Ecommerce, and more.

Jan. 23: Stories to Watch 2024

Hosted by the World Resource Institute, Stories to Watch 2024 will focus on how we can move those in power to make the necessary shifts toward a net zero, climate-resilient future. Four stories will be presented that look at the “political barriers to effective climate action, how to fix the world’s dysfunctional food system, the missing link in the clean energy revolution, and climate change’s ‘silent killer’.”

Jan. 24-25: TravMedia IMM

Calling all travel writers! This global networking event connects the travel industry with editors, journalists, broadcasters, and influencers. Sessions will cover AI best practices, travel content for streaming platforms, sustainable travel, and more. IMM is free for media attendees and will “provide an unrivaled return on the time invested and help journalists plan a year’s worth of travel.” The event will take place at the Javits Center in New York City.

Jan. 26: Election 2024: How to use poll data to accurately inform the public

An election year means media coverage will be dominated by polling data. For journalists, it’s critical to understand how polling organizations conduct their surveys to accurately inform the public. This is a free National Press Club Journalism Institute webinar. Attendees will learn how to dissect polling data and incorporate it into their reporting in ethical and responsible ways.

Jan. 30-Feb. 1: The Southern C Summit

The Southern C Summit welcomes female entrepreneurs for three days of workshops, mentor sessions, social gatherings, and the ever-popular silent disco and swag market. Topics will cover the latest in e-commerce, media, marketing, and more. If you’re passionate about blogging, wellness, fashion, food, art, or media, this is a great event to check out. Both virtual and in-person ticket options are available. The in-person event will take place in Sea Island, Georgia.

Feb. 1-Sept. 26: Poynter Beat Academy

Register now for Poynter’s Beat Academy, a webinar series kicking off in February that “equips journalists with beat expertise, data know-how and excellent local and national sources.” Attend all or some of the weekly webinars, which will cover timely topics like climate change, the presidential election, transgender medical care, and the economy.

Feb. 2-3: Pinners Conference and Expo (Overland Park, KS)

DIY and craft bloggers will head to the first Pinners Conference of the year to learn from more than 100 workshops and browse the expansive expo floor. So far, the packed schedule of classes covers crafts like hand knitting, glass etching, macrame, sourdough 101, air fryer tips, and more.

Feb. 6: The Investigative Agenda for Climate Change Journalism

This webinar from the Global Investigative Journalism Network will bring together journalists to share ideas, strategies, and techniques for covering the climate crisis. A panel of journalists and experts will discuss the top priorities for investigative journalism on climate change, including the fossil fuel industry, government policies, climate change finance, and more. The webinar will be in English but will also be available in Arabic, French, and Spanish.

Feb. 7: Election data: Before Election Night, During and After

This is a free webinar from Investigative Reporters and Editors that is exclusive to IRE members. Election specialists from the AP, Texas Tribune, and Star Tribune will discuss their approaches to election storytelling, including explainers, dashboards, and post-election visual analysis.

Feb. 16-19: Women’s Travel Fest

In 2024, the annual Travel Fest will be headed to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The weekend retreat will feature curated talks, workshops, community exercises, and mindful practices for travel lovers and content creators. Sessions will cover video creation for social media, traveling (almost) free with credit card points, how to travel with a full-time job, train travel, and much more.

Feb. 22-25: IDEA Health and Fitness Summit

This event is a great option for fitness bloggers and vloggers. They can connect with other personal trainers, entrepreneurs, and business owners and learn new strategies to create change and get noticed in a crowded marketplace. Topics cover training techniques, nutrition, training science, and professional development.

Feb. 29-March 2: WORKBENCHcon

WORKBENCHcon is a “growing network of diyers, makers, influencers & bloggers discovering new techniques, products and skills all while learning how to take their businesses to the next level.” Sessions will cover topics like techniques for using tools and new equipment, skills for video production, and business practices for the content creator, with more to come. WORKBENCHcon will be held in Atlanta.

Feb. 29: Voices at Risk: Journalist Safety and Press Freedom during the Super-Election Year

More than 40 countries, representing more than 40% of the world’s population, are holding national elections in 2024 and journalists face serious risks as they work to cover the elections. This webinar from Media Defence and the International Women’s Media Foundation aims to “increase awareness of journalist safety during elections and emphasize how media workers are at the forefront of the struggle for democracy.”

March 4: What is service journalism and how do I do it right?

Join Tim Herrera, former editor of The New York Times’s service journalism desk Smarter Living, for a workshop on finding, reporting, writing, and pitching better service stories.

March 7-9: ACP Spring National College Media Conference

The Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) will bring together collegiate journalists and advisers from across California and the nation for a weekend full of helpful sessions, critiques, advice and feedback. In addition to coverage of the fundamentals, the event will also dive into the fast-changing environment of collegiate journalism and media. Attendees will head to beautiful La Jolla, California, for the conference.

March 7-10: NICAR 2024

IRE & NICAR will host the annual data journalism conference in Baltimore, Maryland. More than 175 sessions will fill the weekend, with topics including AI tools for data journalists, how to interpret weather data, Google Sheets best practices, coding tips and much more. Several networking sessions will also be available to help student journalists, LGBTQIA reporters, international reporters, women in media and journalists of color connect with their peers.

March 8: Online Harassment & Privacy Protections: What journalists need to know

All reporters need to be on the alert for potential online harassment and attacks. Join the National Press Club Journalism Institute for instruction on how to minimize your personal risk of online harassment and protect your private information. Topics will cover how to remove your personal information from the web, tools for privacy protection and more.

March 8-16: SXSW

SXSW will welcome a diverse group of innovators, storytellers, humanitarians and global thought leaders back to Austin, Texas, for nine days of collaboration. AI, climate change, civic engagement, and film and TV are just a few of the dozens of tracks available to attendees.

March 13-16: Tastemaker Conference

This popular food blogger event will take place in Chicago. Attendees will be treated to meals (of course), swag bags, workshops, panels and food excursions around the amazing Chicago food scene. Sessions will cover SEO, DEI, content creation, revenue growth and more helpful topics for food bloggers.

March 15: The Appeals Process: Steps to take when your FOIA requests are denied

This webinar from the National Press Club Journalism Institute will focus on practical advice on the records appeals process: how to start, how to track and how to succeed with your open records requests.

March 17-20: Alt Summit

Head to Palm Springs for the 2024 Alt Summit, which brings together thousands of women influencers and entrepreneurs and provides a “physical gathering place for that community and then incredible things happen.” Sessions will cover social media best practices, steps for building a personal brand, legal issues for influencers and more.

March 20: AI + Fact-Checking in an Election Year

This Zoom meetup from ONA will test out new AI tools designed to fact-check images, video and news articles. Attendees will complete exercises on how to use them and discover ways to use them to keep their communities informed about the election. Tickets are $25 or free for ONA members.

March 22: Career Day at the National Press Club

Career Day attendees will be able to meet dozens of recruiters from some of the top newsrooms and PR/communication firms in the Mid-Atlantic. Job search training and free professional headshots will also be available.

March 27: AP Photography Showcase: Capturing the Solar Eclipse

The solar eclipse on April 8 will be the last one for the next two decades, so you better get a good photo of it. During this webcast, an AP photographer will look at past eclipse photos and discuss how they were captured. The event is open to professional photographers and hobbyists and will include a Q&A session.

April 2024

April 3-7: Craftcation

Calling all craft bloggers! Craftcation offers attendees more than 200 craft and business workshops. Visitors will “explore dozens of genres in our hands-on workshops where you’ll get instruction and inspiration to find your creative flow.” While the full schedule is TBD, past events have taught everything from sewing to screenprinting, perfume making, knitting, shoe making, mixed media art and painting. The event will take place in Ventura, California.

April 12-14: Women in Travel Summit

Creative entrepreneurs, influencers, and more travel experts will head to Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah, for WITS 2024. They will “discuss future innovations, build dynamic collaborations, and change travel worldwide, all while supporting and empowering a diverse community.” Discussion will center around elevating women and underrepresented creators as well as current issues in travel. April 17-21: International Journalism Festival

Perugia, Italy, will again host the International Journalism Festival, the largest annual media event in Europe. Major topics for the 2024 event include AI, Ukraine, disinformation, climate reporting, and collaborative journalism. Session proposals will be accepted through the end of 2023.

June 5-7: Craft + Commerce

Boise, Idaho, will host the event where “top online creators gather to help grow their businesses.” Inspiring keynotes, intimate workshops, and plenty of networking opportunities will round out the schedule. “The Trojan Horse Strategy: How to Pick a Profitable Niche (That Doesn’t Feel Limiting)” and “Deliverability Deserves a Keynote: 3 Strategies to Stay Out of the Spam Folder” are just a few of the sessions on the schedule.

July 2024

July 9-12: TBEX North America

Travel content creators will attend TBEX to boost their writing, photography, and video skills, network with other creators, travel experts, and tourist boards, and more. Dozens of workshops, sessions, and forums will fill the schedule. TBEX North America will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

August 2024

Aug. 19-22: Podcast Movement

Thousands of podcasters and industry pros will head to Washington, DC, for Podcast Movement. The four days will include more than 100 educational sessions and workshops, networking events and parties, and a podcasting expo and trade show.

September 2024

Sept. 18-21: ONA24

The Online News Association’s annual event focuses on the future of digital media and will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. Attendees range from digital media audience and analytics professionals to news product, strategy, and business executives and entrepreneurs.

October 2024

Nov. 11-14: Web Summit

The “world’s premier tech conference” will take place in Lisbon, Portugal. Educational masterclasses and roundtables will be available at the event, which aims to “gather policymakers, heads of state and the founders and CEOs of technology companies and fast-growing startups to ask a simple question: Where to next?”
