August Events for Journalists and Bloggers to Plan For

While August may mark the back-to-school season for students, why not make it a time for professionals to also go “back to school” and boost their own reporting skills by connecting (or reconnecting) with peers and industry experts? August is full of unique events for journalists and bloggers that cover a range of topics, from travel writing to climate change reporting, investigative journalism, DIY blogging, and podcasting.

Aug. 2-6: NABJ 2023 Convention & Career Fair
The annual convention for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is the “premier multi-day conference for journalism education, career development, networking, and innovation.” This year’s event will take place in Birmingham, Ala., and it’s packed with more than 200 trainings, sessions, and workshops. Sessions will cover topics like investigative journalism, sports and social justice, the impacts of AI, newsroom diversity, and more.
Aug. 10-13: Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference
Now in its 31st year, the conference offers an array of workshops, panels, evening activities, and informal interactions in a collegial atmosphere. Intensive workshop sessions each morning will focus on the basics of travel writing. Optional pre-conference classes will be devoted to travel photography and writing as well as the general beauty of the craft.
Aug. 14: Covering Climate Change Science and Policy in a Polarized World (application deadline)
This one-day masterclass from Poynter will cover the latest findings in climate science and policy, fossil fuel replacement, carbon capture tech, and more. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the state of climate science and new tools and resources to boost their climate reporting. The workshop is free to attend and will take place on Aug. 29 in the Washington, D.C.-area. The deadline to apply is Aug. 14.
Aug. 14: Executive Leadership Summit (application deadline)
Another event from Poynter, the three-day Executive Leadership Summit will “provide top-level newsroom managers with the tools, insights and coaching to bring their leadership vision to life.” Topics will include building a leadership team, retaining talented people, ethics and transparency, conflict resolution, DEI, and more. The online summit will take place Oct. 18-20, 2023.
Aug. 21-24: Podcast Movement
Podcasters and industry pros will head to Denver, Colorado, for Podcast Movement. The four days will include more than 150 educational sessions and workshops, networking events and parties, and a podcasting expo and trade show.
Aug. 23-26: ONA23
The Online News Association’s annual event focuses on the future of digital media and will be held in Philadelphia. Attendees range from digital media audience and analytics professionals to news product, strategy, and business executives and entrepreneurs. The schedule includes sessions on Canva for newsrooms, productivity-boosting tips, data storytelling, election coverage, solutions journalism, and much more.
Aug. 25-26: Pinners Conference (Pomona, CA)
Head to sunny California for this conference + shopping event for DIYers and craft bloggers. Resin jewelry, macrame, embroidery, makeup tips, and charcuterie are just a few of the topics that will be covered in the jam-packed schedule.
