May 1: Environmental Journalists on the Frontlines of Democracy
Ahead of World Press Freedom Day (May 3), the Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Program and the Society of Environmental Journalists “will celebrate the important role of environmental journalism and highlight the need to protect journalists around the world from surveillance, censorship, oppression, and violence.” The event ties into this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis.”
May 2: Preparing data for the AI revolution
As AI continues to be implemented across industries, media and entertainment marketers and creators are focused on AI-driven insights as a key to success. But what AI tech should they use and how should they use it? During this session, Gaby Hosokawa, senior product marketing manager of media and entertainment at Salesforce, and Maarten van Hoek, media industry strategy and scale leader at Salesforce, will discuss the necessary elements for preparing data ecosystems that unlock AI’s full potential.
May 2: Migration: The Missing Link

This six-week seminar from Poynter will cover a range of topics to help journalists build a successful career. Come away with new strengths and a better understanding of pitching, storytelling, interviewing, using data in reporting, ethical decision-making and more.
May 8: Leveraging AI in your Audience Engagement Strategy
The Online News Association will host this event, led by Hearken CEO & Co-Founder Jennifer Brandel and UIC Senior Lecturer Mike Reilley. The training session will cover how to employ AI as part of your audience engagement strategy and how the technology can help you identify communities and partnership opportunities, streamline workflows and craft messaging.
May 9: What is service journalism and how do I do it right?
This 90-minute workshop will be hosted by Tim Herrera, former editor of The New York Times’s service journalism desk Smarter Living. Come away with a better understanding of how to find, report, write and pitch better service stories.
May 22: AI Prompt Writing
This event from the Online News Association will be a hands-on workshop covering tips, examples and exercises for writing prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.ai. Learn how to craft prompts that prevent AI hallucinations and get ChatGPT to present information in the format you want.
May 23: How to start and grow a newsletter
Learn how to launch and grow a successful newsletter in this 90-minute session from Tim Herrera, author and former editor at The New York Times’s Smarter Living, and a panel of experts.

June 5-7: Craft + Commerce
Boise, Idaho, will host the event where “top online creators gather to help grow their businesses.” Inspiring keynotes, intimate workshops and plenty of networking opportunities will round out the schedule. “The Trojan Horse Strategy: How to Pick a Profitable Niche (That Doesn’t Feel Limiting)” and “Deliverability Deserves a Keynote: 3 Strategies to Stay Out of the Spam Folder” are just a few of the sessions on the schedule.
