Oct. 1-22: Level Up: AI for Journalists
This weekly training from Poynter will “help journalists understand critical aspects of the swiftly evolving artificial intelligence landscape, including how it’s developing, building a framework for ethics and standards, how newsrooms are using it and how to fact-check AI.” Each week will feature two hours of master-class-level instruction that will allow attendees to cover high-level topics and gain hands-on experience with a new AI tool.
Oct. 3: COVID conspiracies, flu facts and respiratory realness: The journalists’ guide to debunking health misinformation
This free, 90-minute Poynter webinar will feature CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Come away with a better understanding of vaccine misinformation: examples of it, how it spreads, how to track it and how to debunk it for your audience.
Oct. 3: Case Study: How the Hearst DevHub built AI tools to improve their newsrooms’ workflow
Hearst DevHub’s Tim O’Rourke and Ryan Serpico will join the Online News Association (ONA) for this live session to demonstrate the AI-powered tools and reader experiences the team has built for newsrooms in their network. They’ll cover learnings, pitfalls, highlights and surprises from their AI development journey.
Oct. 10: AI, Copyright and Legal Considerations for Journalists, Freelancers and News Organizations
Another unique session from ONA will give an overview of what journalists should know about the legal issues surrounding AI. You’ll hear about current court cases, copyright issues, how other industries are navigating AI issues, using the tech to create content and much more.
Oct. 20-22: America’s Newspapers Senior Leadership Conference
This conference “focuses on the future of newspapers including everything from developing new revenue streams to dealing with rising expenses and employee challenges.” It will take place in Charleston, South Carolina. The agenda includes sessions like “Recruitment and Retention Trends Within the Industry,” “The Trust Study and Local Advertising Effectiveness” and “Tangible Revenue Ideas to Take Home.”
Oct. 26-27: Women in Visual Journalism Conference
Women television reporters, still and TV photojournalists, online journalists, freelancers and documentary filmmakers will head to Dallas for NPPA’s conference. “There are so many ways to tell stories — this event embraces them all — because we are better together,” the site explains.
Coming in November…
Nov. 11-14: Web Summit
The “world’s premier tech conference” will take place in Lisbon, Portugal. Educational masterclasses and roundtables will be available at the event, which aims to “gather policymakers, heads of state and the founders and CEOs of technology companies and fast-growing startups to ask a simple question: Where to next?”
