5 November Events for Journalists and Bloggers
Welcome to Blogger Events, a monthly column of upcoming blogger and journalist events that we think you should know about. Plan even further ahead and bookmark our page with upcoming events for the entire year.
November might be a slower month for events as the year ramps down and everyone preps for the holidays, but you can still find a few unique trainings and webinars for journalists and bloggers. Check out the calendar below to see what works for you.
November Events
Nov. 1: Case Study: Enhancing Fact-Checking with AI at Der Spiegel
During this virtual session from the Online News Association (ONA), attendees will get a look at how Germany’s Der Spiegel built an AI tool to support its fact-checking process. Join the live session to “learn how they built it, what they’ve learned and what comes next, and to ask your questions about how the tool came together.”
Nov. 6: Introductory Webinar Pluralistic Media for Democracy
During this webinar, Journalismfund Europe will cover the new grant program Pluralistic Media for Democracy. The fund “will inject at least €1.400.000 of financial support to local and regional outlets, community media, investigative journalism, and public interest news organizations who are struggling in news desert areas and places where media pluralism is strained.”
Nov. 11-14: Web Summit
The “world’s premier tech conference” will take place in Lisbon, Portugal. Educational masterclasses and roundtables will be available at the event, which aims to “gather policymakers, heads of state and the founders and CEOs of technology companies and fast-growing startups to ask a simple question: Where to next?” The nearly 20 tracks cover topics like AI, new media, creative, commerce and marketing.
Nov. 12: How newsrooms and fundraising teams can collaborate to fund impactful journalism
During this free session from the Lenfest News Philanthropy Network, a team from MinnPost will share case studies of how their nonprofit news organization has built a successful culture of philanthropy. The session will also feature role-playing and idea-mapping exercises to help overcome fears of funder influence and editorial independence.
Nov. 16: Poynter’s Bowtie Ball
The Poynter Institute’s annual Bowtie Ball features “dinner, dancing, and toasts with Pulitzer Prize winners, best-selling authors, and media personalities from the nation’s most beloved and revered newsrooms.” This year, the Poynter Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism will be awarded to Robin Roberts.
