Coming up in July, events for journalists and bloggers will cover a variety of topics, including digital security, career transitions, climate journalism and public health reporting. Plus, if you’re an early-career journalist looking to nail down essential reporting techniques, there’s something for you this month.

July 7-Aug. 3: Digital Security for Journalists in Times of Crisis

This free online course will be offered by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN). Learn how to protect your accounts, devices, communications and sensitive information using practical tools and strategies. There are five modules, including an introduction that introduces the fundamental concepts of digital security. There are no required live events, so you can complete activities at your own pace.

July 9-12: NAHJ Conference and Expo

The annual conference for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists will offer workshops and panels to help reporters achieve career growth. “Dealing with vulnerable sources and sources who refuse to talk to journalists,” “Free, powerful and innovative tools for your journalism,” “How Latinos influence tourism and can shape travel writing” and “The importance of Spanish-language documentaries” are just a few of the engaging sessions on the schedule. A career fair will enable attendees to meet with recruiters before, during and after the event. NAHJ2025 will take place in Chicago.

July 14-Aug. 4: Building Blocks: Critical Skills for New Reporters

This journalism training program from Poynter teaches early-career journalists essential reporting techniques, effective storytelling methods and newsroom navigation skills. Virtual sessions and individual mentorship will be provided by veteran journalists. Come away with strategies for crafting compelling story ideas, connecting your own background to your reporting, conducting effective interviews, navigating newsroom dynamics and more.

July 15: The Trump Tariff Strategy Report Card — Six Months In

This free webinar will be hosted by the National Press Foundation. The discussion will feature top experts on the global economy as they “take stock of the administration’s strategy.”

July 16: 7 Steps to Unlocking New Possibilities with The Rewrite’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas

This webinar is part of a new partnership between the Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS) and The Rewrite, a community for journalists looking to reinvent their careers. The session will offer a 7-step framework to help attendees unlock new possibilities, so that they aren’t blindsided without a plan if (or more likely when) industry changes hit.

July 16-19: TBEX North America

Travel content creators will attend TBEX to boost their writing, photography and video skills; network with other creators, travel experts and tourist boards; and more. Dozens of workshops, sessions and forums will fill the schedule. TBEX North America will take place in Quebec City, Canada, a top travel destination and the only walled city north of Mexico.

July 17: Climate Is the Everything Story

Every journalist is now a climate journalist as the topic touches every beat. During this virtual session from the Online News Association (ONA), attendees will get an in-depth look at the Solutions Journalism Network/CCN’s Climate Blueprint for Media Transformation. Learn about best practices for supporting communities in effecting change and amplifying climate journalists’ work amid opposition from governments and corporations.

July 25: Public Health Journalism: Lessons from our inaugural journalism fellowship cohort

This will be the final webinar in a series of public health journalism sessions from the National Press Club Journalism Institute. The journalists who have participated in the organization’s inaugural Public Health Reporting Fellowship will recap their reporting projects and discuss lessons learned, key findings and tips for public health reporting.

July 30: The 5 Ws of Research

This on-demand course is free for a limited time from Poynter. In it, veteran journalist Caryn Baird teaches you “the strategies used in top newsrooms to track down police reports, court records, corporate filings and more.” Find out how to apply the 5 Ws—who, what, where, when and why—to research smarter and find the facts quickly.

Aug. 4: What Should We Say? New Research on AI Disclosures in Journalism

This hour-long virtual session from ONA will cover the latest research and best practices for AI transparency in journalism, including what you should say to audiences, what kind of language builds trust vs. skepticism, and pitfalls to avoid. It’s an ideal event for those navigating AI use in their newsroom or looking to build clarity and credibility with their community.

Aug. 4-5: Affiliate Summit East

The Affiliate Summit is where “4,500+ advertisers, publishers, ecommerce sellers, affiliates, content publishers, media buyers, networks, and tech suppliers gather to create partnerships, launch sales, and grow their businesses.” For content publishers, the concurrent Content & Commerce Summit will cover topics like monetization, how to diversify your traffic, the impact of Google Search Generative Experience on SEO and more.
