August might be a slower month for events, but there are still several unique learning opportunities for journalists and bloggers in the coming weeks. From AI disclosures in journalism to writing routine best practices and tips for social media, August offers some helpful and timely trainings.

Aug. 4: What Should We Say? New Research on AI Disclosures in Journalism

This hour-long virtual session from ONA will cover the latest research and best practices for AI transparency in journalism, including what you should say to audiences, what kind of language builds trust vs. skepticism, and pitfalls to avoid. It’s an ideal event for those navigating AI use in their newsroom or looking to build clarity and credibility with their community.

Aug. 4-5: Affiliate Summit East

The Affiliate Summit is where “4,500+ advertisers, publishers, ecommerce sellers, affiliates, content publishers, media buyers, networks, and tech suppliers gather to create partnerships, launch sales, and grow their businesses.” For content publishers, the concurrent Content & Commerce Summit will cover topics like monetization, how to diversify your traffic, the impact of Google Search Generative Experience on SEO and more.

Aug. 7: Creating a Writing Routine: How to Develop Healthy Writing Habits to Help You Finish Your Script

While this three-hour webinar from Writer’s Digest University is geared toward script writing, it never hurts for journalists to get a few pointers for a strong writing routine. Whether it’s time management, outlining, overcoming writer’s block or finding your voice as a writer, this session could provide several valuable takeaways for journalists.

Aug. 21: Social Media Secrets: Taking Your Books to TikTok, Instagram, and Beyond

This is another unique session from Writer’s Digest University. During the 90-minute webinar, attendees will learn “what it takes to get started with (or improve!) your social video game, including what to post and where to reach new fans, build your platform and become an influential author.” In a fragmented media landscape where news consumers are increasingly getting their news from social media, this session can provide valuable lessons.

Sept. 3-5: Independent News Sustainability Summit

This event from LION Publishers will bring together independent news publishers, experts and supporters to “share expert knowledge, hard-won lessons, and actionable advice on running a news business while being in community with people who care deeply about strengthening the local news ecosystem.” Some of the sessions available now on the schedule will cover the ups and downs of grant-funded reporting, how to deal with organizational change, influencer strategies for newsrooms, and how to build financial plans based on storytelling. The summit will take place in St. Louis, Missouri.

Sept. 4: Write to Sell: Nonfiction Proposals

Looking to transition your investigative story into a full-blown book? Check out this 90-minute webinar to receive a critique of your proposal that ensures you are explaining your concept clearly and engagingly, and proving the demand for the book.

Sept. 5-7: JAWS CAMP 2025

The annual Conference and Mentoring Program (CAMP) from the Journalism & Women Symposium is held to “bring women [anyone who self-identifies as a woman, or as a non-binary, gender-nonconforming or agender person] journalists together from different specialties, beats, demographics and geographies to share with, learn from and empower each other.” The 40th event will feature a keynote from Sally Buzbee of Reuters, a Books & Browse Authors Panel, video resources training from specialists at C-SPAN and an auction to raise funds for the organization. It will take place in Washington, D.C.

Sept. 10-13: ONA25

Digital media leaders will head to the Online News Association’s annual conference for the latest in AI, climate and resilience in journalism. The three main topics will be broken down into sessions covering audience development, entrepreneurship, product, leadership and more. ONA25 will be held in New Orleans.
