Sept. 3-5: Independent News Sustainability Summit

This event from LION Publishers will bring together independent news publishers, experts and supporters to “share expert knowledge, hard-won lessons, and actionable advice on running a news business while being in community with people who care deeply about strengthening the local news ecosystem.” Some of the sessions available now on the schedule will cover the ups and downs of grant-funded reporting, how to deal with organizational change, influencer strategies for newsrooms, and how to build financial plans based on storytelling. The summit will take place in St. Louis, Missouri.

Sept. 4: Level Up Your Fact-Checking with AI

Wudan Yan, founder of Factual, will lead this one-hour webinar on how to best leverage generative AI tools for fact-checking. Come away with best practices for prompting and using generative AI when fact-checking, and learn how generative AI can help with finding sources, unearthing conflicts of interest, and more.

Sept. 5-7: JAWS CAMP 2025

The annual Conference and Mentoring Program (CAMP) from the Journalism & Women Symposium is held to “bring women [anyone who self-identifies as a woman, or as a non-binary, gender-nonconforming or agender person] journalists together from different specialties, beats, demographics and geographies to share with, learn from and empower each other.” The 40th event will feature a keynote from Sally Buzbee of Reuters, a Books & Browse Authors Panel, video resources training from specialists at C-SPAN and an auction to raise funds for the organization. It will take place in Washington, D.C.

Sept. 10-13: ONA25

Digital media leaders will head to the Online News Association’s annual conference for the latest in AI, climate and resilience in journalism. The three main topics will be broken down into sessions covering audience development, entrepreneurship, product, leadership and more. ONA25 will be held in New Orleans.

Sept. 18: Axios Media Trends Live

Axios’ first-ever live event dedicated to the future of media will feature newsworthy conversations with industry leaders from the worlds of podcasting, newspaper publishing, broadcast media, social media and legacy news organizations. Attendees will hear about AI’s effects on the media landscape, the future of entertainment in the streaming era, the evolving ad market and more. The event will take place in New York City.

Sept. 19-20: Texas Pinners Conference

This conference and expo for DIY lovers is perfect for journalists and bloggers covering various crafts, food, decor, etc. The Fort Worth, TX, event will feature 100+ classes on things like floral arranging, wood burning, embroidery, makeup tips, a Canva beginner’s guide, illusion cakes, and much more.

Sept. 21-23: Travel & Words

This annual conference aims to build productive connections between travel journalists and destination marketers. The schedule consists of one-on-one meetings, casual networking opportunities, presentations by tourism experts, workshops, a guided tour and hosted evening receptions. This event will take place in Medford, Oregon.

Sept. 28: World News Day

While not a training or networking event like others on this list, World News Day is an important event to add to your calendar. The global awareness campaign coincides with the UN’s Universal Day for Access to Information and aims to amplify the value of fact-based journalism. It’s organized by the World Editors Forum, The Canadian Journalism Foundation, Project Kontinuum, and the International Fund for Public Interest Media. To be involved, you can sign up to receive information, updates and campaign assets.

Coming in October…

Oct. 8-10: Mental Health in Journalism Summit

This is the second edition of the Mental Health in Journalism Summit, which is “dedicated to building collective resilience during uncertain times.” Oct. 8 will offer sessions in Spanish, while English sessions will be scheduled for Oct. 9-10. Newsroom managers, editors, reporters, freelancers, media professionals, academics, members of journalism unions and associations, and mental health experts are encouraged to attend.

Oct. 23-24: News Reach Conference

This conference is all about SEO for the news industry. SEO experts, publishers and media professionals are invited to attend to learn about strategies for maximum visibility in the digital news universe, new trends (Google News, AI-supported SEO, etc.), and proven methods for success. The event will take place in Dortmund, Germany.
