The Society of Professional Journalists hosted this webinar in mid-March. During the event, the panel discussed the growing issue of government use of algorithms to make major decisions. These range from education funding to deciding who gets a COVID-19 vaccine first. Panelists look at how algorithms are constructed, the bias baked into them, and how reporters can educate the public about them.
This hour-long webinar from First Draft is hosted by Maddy Webb and Laura Garcia. It teaches reporters “the fundamentals of searching and understanding the Facebook Ad Library. We will help you understand what information you have access to, how to interpret it, and how it can be used to enrich reporting.”
This is a free course from MediaWise for Seniors. The course will provide examples of political, health, travel, and climate misinformation and teach viewers techniques for identifying false information and seeking out trustworthy sources. The course is designed for people 50 years and older, but these skills can be critical for anyone who consumes news online.
Multiple Dates/Events in 2021: International Food Blogger Conference
Food bloggers, food writers, and digital media influencers will have several opportunities to boost their skills in 2021 with events from the International Food Blogger Conference. The main conference will take place in October in El Paso, Texas. But throughout the year, free virtual events will be available and will cover a range of food content creation topics. The virtual events will include Social Media (Jan. 15), Website & SEO (March 18), Working with Brands (May 12), and Productivity (July 13).
Multiple Dates in Feb. and March: Covering the Statehouse
Reporters covering local politics should consider applying for this series of online workshops hosted by the National Press Foundation. It will include Friday training sessions in February and March, as well as a few summer sessions. Topics will include “localizing federal datasets; putting the impact of the federal government into context; covering Congress and the White House from afar; fact-checking, community engagement, and solutions journalism; and making the most of TV or Zoom appearances.” The deadline for applying is Jan. 25, 2021.
January 2021: Yoga for Journalists
2020 was A YEAR and many journalists are experiencing burnout, anxiety, sleep loss, and elevated stress levels. This course from Leslie, the News Yogi, will teach reporters which yoga and meditation practices work best for them and how to use them to address trauma and stress due to their work.
Jan. 5: Solutions Journalism 101
This webinar, hosted by the Solutions Journalism Network, will “explore the ins and outs of solutions journalism, talk about why it’s important, explain key steps in reporting a solutions story, and share tips and resources for journalists interested in investigating how people are responding to social problems.” After that, make sure to check out other useful SJN courses covering topics like reporting on education, crime, and health care.
Jan. 11-14: CES
For the first time in its history, CES will go all-digital in 2021, allowing participants to join from anywhere in the world. “This new experience will feature more than 1,000 exhibitors from around the world, showcasing the latest trends and innovation in artificial intelligence, 5G, digital health, smart cities, vehicle tech, and beyond,” Gary Shapiro, CTA’s president and CEO, said in a press release. A live anchor desk will help attendees navigate the digital experience, hear the latest news, and view interviews. Media registrants are encouraged to complete registration by Jan. 8, 2021.
In 2021, the International Food Blogger Conference will include four virtual events in addition to the one big in-person conference in October. The first of the one-day virtual summits is focused on social media. The day will feature eight sessions and attendees can choose just one session or get an All-Access Pass to participate in all of them. Sessions include “How to Use Instagram Stories to Attract an Engaged Audience,” “Blog ‘Gram: Repurposing Blog Content to Instagram,” “How to Overcome Fear and Get Into YouTube Already!” and more.
Jan. 29: BlogHer Health
This free, virtual two-hour event will “fuel your mind and body with tips on how to create compelling content, ways to better navigate your health & inspiring stories.” Industry experts will discuss how to create competitive health & wellness content for your blog, social media platforms, podcast, and more. A focus will be on trending health topics that impact women around the world.
If you’re considering a move to business journalism, this hour-long event is for you. Attendees will hear from New York Times economics reporter Ben Casselman, The Economist globalization editor Soumaya Keynes, NPR Planet Money Indicator host Cardiff de Alejo Garcia, and Slate senior business correspondent Jordan Weissmann. The panel will discuss their career paths, what their day-to-day looks like, salaries, and more, in addition to answering audience questions. It will be hosted by The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW).
Feb. 3-5: Southern C Retreat
In 2021, the Southern C Summit will feature options for a 3-day retreat in Sea Island, Georgia, and a virtual event. The in-person event is limited to 150 people and sessions and breakout events will be available to virtual attendees. The event is geared toward entrepreneurs, creatives, and business owners in a range of industries, including blogging, food, art, beauty, interior design, and more. It’s where #connectcollaboratecreate meets #relaxrechargereignite.
ProPublica, partnering with The Pudding, a visual essays online publication, is accepting applications from students for its sixth annual scholarship program. The program will sponsor 25 students to “attend an eligible journalism conference in 2021 and/or to contribute toward journalism-related expenses such as subscriptions to news publications, software, FOIA fees, or equipment (think cameras, recorders, etc.).” Students from underrepresented groups in journalism are especially encouraged to apply.
This is a four-week online course from the Knight Center. In it, “students will learn the fundamental skills required to launch and maintain a newsletter through a standard product life cycle and how a newsletter can fit into their work product and serve their audience.”
Feb. 25-26: Social Media Strategies Summit
Having a strong social media strategy is key to promoting your blog content, building an audience, and driving traffic to your site. This virtual summit will teach attendees how to utilize their connections, tools, and skills to see social media success. Some of the planned sessions include “How to Grow and Maintain a Social Media Following” and “How to Choose and Optimize the Right Social Platform for your Brand.” Ticketholders will also have access to live Q&A sessions, downloadable presentation slides, 1:1 meetings, and more.
Feb. 28-March 3: Alt Summit
The Alt Summit brings together creative entrepreneurs and influencers to “find a business bestie (or two),” learn from each other and help each other. The event caters to a wide mix of creatives, including artists, photographers, pinners, vloggers, content creators, designers, and bloggers. Before it was canceled due to COVID, the 2020 summit planned to cover topics like writing, social media, podcasting, crafts, and brand relationships. At the time of writing, the event is still being planned as an in-person conference in Palm Springs, Calif.
March 1-2: Design Influencers Connect
This year, the Design Influencers Conference is offering three virtual events that act as the “intersection of interior design and the world of new media including blogging, social media, e-commerce, digital branding, book publishing, line promotion, and more.” Registration is free for all three Connect events. The end of both days of the event will feature a Speed Networking session, in which attendees are randomly paired for 5-minute face-to-face chats before being paired with someone else.
March 3-5: NICAR 2021
The annual data journalism conference from Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) will be taking place completely online this year. Whether attendees have beginner, intermediate, or advanced data journalism skills, NICAR will have something for everyone. Pre-recorded videos and lessons will cover spreadsheets, SQL, programming, data visualization, and more. Note: Attendees must be current IRE members.
March 16-20: SXSW Online
While an in-person event hasn’t been finalized yet, South By is adding an online component to the 2021 offerings. Keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases, networking, and exhibitions will be available. Some of the 2021 themes include A New Urgency (how to make progress on issues like racial injustice, poverty, and the climate crisis), The Rebirth of Business (examining capitalism as we rebuild the economy), and Cultural Resilience in the Arts (how an explosion of creativity will impact our culture).
April 5-6: Design Influencers Connect

April 8-11: Writing Workshop for Journalists of Color
Hosted by Poynter, this four-day virtual seminar will feature expert instructors helping journalists of color develop their confidence and skills to share their unique perspectives in their opinion pieces and personal essays. The instructors will include Tom Huang, Aisha Sultan, Eric Deggans, and Fernanda Santos. “This seminar will foster the diversity of voices necessary in the profession and train the next generation of opinion writers from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.” Apply soon, because this program will be competitive with only 15 available spots. Applications are accepted until Feb. 7, 2021.
April 16-17: Pinners Conference & Expo (Atlanta)
The Pinners events are designed to help attendees learn, create, and connect. There will be more than 200 shops and 100 classes to choose from. It will be taking place at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, Georgia. Classes cover a range of DIY crafts, including weaving, vinyl adhesives, and calligraphy.
April 20-24: Women in Travel Summit Online
The Women in Travel Summit is a place for travel experts to “discuss future innovations, build dynamic collaborations, and change travel worldwide, all while supporting and empowering a dynamic community of women and gender diverse people.” Bloggers and content creators will have access to the sessions and keynotes, 1:1 virtual meetings with brands, and virtual tours. The tours allow attendees to “travel” safely while staying home in exchange for content creation. A Beginner Bootcamp is available for those new to blogging and content creation.
The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will host this four-week online course. It is open to anyone interested in how to plan and mitigate risks for women journalists. Alison Baskerville, a documentary photographer and personal safety trainer, will lead the course. The modules will cover safety planning, situational awareness, harassment, and sef-care/mental wellbeing.
May 5: Solutions Journalism 101

May 11: How to Combat Disinformation
Laura Garcia and Shaydanay Urbani from First Draft will lead this webinar. “They will provide a run-through of the main narratives surrounding disinformation about vaccines and other issues, how to spot them, quick tricks to verify them, and how to leverage your communication platforms to slow the spread of disinformation.”
This is the next virtual session from IFBC in 2021. The Monetization session will help food content creators “add a side of revenue” to their business. Topics will include “Maximizing Cookbook Sales,” “Teach Your First Cooking Class Online,” and “Craveable Consumer Content.”
May 18-June 8: Fundamentals of Investigative Journalism
This four-week seminar will be hosted by Poynter and taught by ProPublica assistant managing editor Alexandra Zayas. Attendees will analyze existing investigations and learn how to apply the strategies to their own reporting. You’ll learn how to choose the right story, access the information, and craft a story around it. This seminar regularly sells out, so apply soon!
May 19-21: 2021 Collaborative Journalism Summit
This fully online summit will feature lightning talks (5-minute presentations), workshops, and discussions on a range of collaborative journalism topics and projects. The three days are packed with interesting sessions, but don’t worry: you’ll get a meditation break to recenter yourself between activities.
May 20-21: We Are Podcast
If you’re ready to start making money from your podcast, this is the event for you. Attendees will learn industry secrets from successful podcasters, strategies for building a profitable show, how to use audio apps like Clubhouse, and more. The interactive event will action things in real-time, answering questions on the spot.
Summer Course: Vox Media Writers Workshop
Apply now for this no-cost, hands-on training and mentorship program from Vox Media. It will pair people new to the industry and interested in a career in journalism with experienced editors and writers. Three remote workshops are scheduled in June, July, and August. According to the site, “Each mentor will work with two people to help them develop, refine, and strengthen one reported article, to be published on the workshop website.” Apply by May 16, 2021.
June 4: Pro Tips: Writing Refresh
This three-hour workshop will be hosted by the National Press Club. As reporters begin getting back to their normal routines after being vaccinated, this event aims to reenergize tired writing. Other sessions will cover how to be inclusive in your writing and how to write irresistible headlines. Sessions will be lead by reporters from the L.A. Times and Washington Post. June 7-10: Reporting in the Age of Social Justice
This four-day workshop from Poynter will include two 90-minute online lessons per day. Attendees will also receive a private coaching session to address their specific challenges. Journalists will learn to create stories that matter to society. They’ll hone their storytelling skills from conception to interviewing and storyboarding. Apply by May 10, 2021.
The Solutions Journalism Network and Not in Our Town will partner for this discussion. It will help journalists reporting on hate and intolerance embrace complexity, provide context, and center stories on victims and survivors rather than the perpetrators.
Kirsten Dewar, Global Director of News at Dataminr, will host this webinar and chat with David Clinch, Global Media Consultant and Storyful Founding Partner. Clinch helped pioneer the use of web technology and social media for newsgathering during his time at CNN. June 14-25: High School Journalism Program
This is another popular online program from Poynter. Attendees will build their portfolio with a personal essay, audio package, and video-based fact check. Other topics will cover journalism ethics, storytelling, and understanding misinformation. The program aims to “give young people the chance to learn about writing and develop a passion for the values and craft of journalism.” You can apply by May 17, 2021.
June 21: ONA21 Career Day
Register for free for this one-day event that will take place before the ONA21 conference. Recruiters will participate in video chat rooms and one-on-one interviews. Feel free to stay for the full three hours, or spend a few minutes learning about a particular outlet.
June 22-25: ONA21
The 22nd conference from the Online News Association will “bring together some of the best and brightest in digital journalism, focusing on innovation in audience engagement, product development, trends forecasting and digital business strategy.” A virtual Midway will allow attendees to network with exhibitors and other attendees.
June 29: AP Stylebook Webinar
This 90-minute webinar will be led by Paula Froke, editor of the AP Stylebook. She’ll cover the major changes (and the reasons behind them) to the Stylebook over the last year. Topics will include the pandemic, economy, and race-related coverage.
As more employees head back to the office, safety and security are key. This event will be hosted by the National Press Club and will feature speakers from The Washington Post and Bloomberg. Attendees will hear new polling data about employers’ and employees’ attitudes around returning to the office. The panelists will talk about how their organizations (or organizations they cover) are approaching back-to-the-office issues.
July 1-17: Summit for Reporters and Editors
Learn to improve your writing, interviewing, and more at this popular summit. Throughout July, attendees of Poynter’s annual summit will get more than 20 hours of live instruction. The award-winning instructors will “lead conversations exploring diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as self-care and mental health, in the newsroom.” Applications close on June 1.
July 2-4: True Crime Podcast Festival
This event will feature live episodes and panels from a variety of popular true crime podcasts. Attendees might also discover new shows they never knew they needed. Virtual and in-person tickets are available. The festival will take place in Kansas City, Missouri.
July 5-23: How to Edit Your Own Writing
This training from Poynter will take place twice a week for three weeks during July. It will be led by former New York Times copy chief Merrill Perlman. In addition to learning how to find errors, attendees will also learn to edit for clarity, organization, and understanding.
July 12-17: NAHJ 2021
The annual conference from the National Association for Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) will be a virtual experience for journalists, technologists, and communicators. It is “the leading experience for journalists and media professionals with the common goal of establishing #MoreLatinosInNews.” Tracks include training for community engagement, investigative reporting, rising to leadership, and more.
July 17-18: Podthon
This year marks the third annual Podthon, an inclusive conference to highlight speakers of color in the industry. The virtual event welcomes podcasters from around the world to share strategies, tips, and advice. More than 30 sessions are available to help attendees boost their skills in community building, monetization, hiring, creating standout guest experiences, and more.
This is the last virtual IFBC event before the in-person conference in El Paso in September. The Productivity summit will feature several sessions, including “3 Sure-Fire Ways to Find the Best Freelancer Out There,” “How to Set Up Your Online Cooking Classes for Success (and Without the Stress)” and “Boost Your Productivity with Biohacking.” An all-access pass is $25, but you can attend the full virtual summit for free if you sign up for “The Future of Food Blogger Conferences & IFBC El Paso Update” session.

Aug. 3-6: Podcast Movement
The Podcast Movement conference brings together podcasters and industry professionals “to learn, grow professionally, and most importantly evolve and improve the podcast community.” You have the option of heading to Nashville for the in-person event or attending virtually. Podcast Movement will include sessions, workshops, panels, and networking events, in addition to an expo where attendees can check out the latest podcasting equipment and services.
Aug. 5: Solutions Journalism 101

Aug. 5-7: Wine Media Conference
The 13th annual Wine Media Conference will take place in Willamette Valley, Oregon. Organizers say that attendees “are not only passionate about wine – they are energized by communicating to their audiences about wine, wineries, and the people that make up the wine industry. This communication via blogs, industry magazines, social media, apps, and industry websites produces an ever-growing spiral of viral conversations.”
Aug. 11: Census Stories Beyond the Numbers
2020 Census numbers will be released by Aug. 16. Journalists should sign up for this one-hour webinar to prepare for covering the changing demographics in their communities. The free webinar will be presented by Poynter and will feature experienced data journalists.
This is the latest of the Creative Conference Calls from the Society for News Design (SND). This call will feature the team at American City Business Journals. The team will discuss how it transformed its 40 weekly publications to ensure each designer’s voice is heard, while still maintaining a design framework.
Aug. 18-21: Women Photograph Virtual Workshop 2021
Registration for this online workshop will be open to all women and nonbinary photographers, anywhere! The event will feature artist talks, discussions on how to stay safe in the field, live demonstrations on post-processing and color correction, and more. Women Photograph is requesting a donation of $25 to attend, but it’s not required.
Aug. 18-21: NABJ 2021
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention & Career Fair will be virtual again this year. This year’s event will feature more than 90 exhibitors and recruiters, and more than 140 workshops and training sessions. Attendees can pre-schedule a meeting with a recruiter and upload their resumes before kick-off day. NABJ2021 is described as the “premier multi-day conference for journalism and media education, career development and advancement, and networking and industry innovation.”
Aug. 23-Sept. 19: Product Strategies for Journalism
The News Product Alliance and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas are teaming up to offer this free online course. Over the course of four weeks, attendees will learn tools and concepts to create and maintain sustainable information products. It’s designed for journalists, digital content creators, social media managers, comms professionals and entrepreneurs, product managers, and UX/UI professionals interested in media.
The International Journalists Network will host this discussion with Kerry Dooley Young, freelance journalist and core topic leader for patient safety with the Association of Health Care Journalists. Young will talk about how to report on vaccine side effects honestly without encouraging vaccine hesitancy.
Sept. 2-4: SPJ 2021 Journalism Conference
The annual Society of Professional Journalists conference will be fully virtual. There will be plenty of workshops, panels, and networking opportunities. Some of the breakout sessions on the schedule include:

Sept. 13-15: Traffic & Conversion Summit
This event will offer both virtual and in-person (San Diego) options to attendees. Experts (and a few celebrities) will provide three days of actionable, proven, strategic content to help you increase traffic, conversions, and sales. Keynote speakers include Daymond John, Kevin O’Leary, and others.
Sept. 16: Covering Climate Justice Solutions
This virtual, private session for journalists will be held during Climate Week NYC. Journalists from CNN, The 19th*, and The Haitian Times will lead the panel discussion and will “offer insights into the challenges and experiences of reporting on justice-centered climate solutions.”
“In this session, Writers’ Co-op hosts Jenni and Wudan explore ways to make passive revenue — ‘set it and forget it’ payments — as a freelance creative. Sometimes this means building your own programs (like The Writers’ Co-op), selling books or courses, or creating worksheets for an online store. Sometimes it looks like using platforms like Medium that pay for views over time. Sometimes it looks like negotiating contracts so you can resell your content over and over again.”

This year’s gathering of personal finance content creators and brands will be a hybrid experience. Personal finance bloggers, podcasters, vloggers, coaches and advisors, social media influencers, authors, and freelancers are encouraged to attend this conference. The annual conference from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) will focus on two pillars: Representation and Resilience. More than 100 food bloggers, writers, social media gurus, and food company reps are expected to attend this year’s IFBC. The event will take place in El Paso, Texas, and Juárez, Mexico. Attendees can get a discount on their registration if they agree to publish blog posts, Instagram stories, or videos about one of the sponsors.

October: Pinners Conferences
October will include two Pinners Conferences: Fort Worth, Texas (Oct. 1-2), and Indianapolis, Indiana (Oct. 8-9). These events are dedicated to those interested in Pinterest-related spaces like DIY, crafting, cooking, photography, fashion, and beauty.
Oct. 14-15: ONA Insights
This year’s event from the Online News Association will offer both in-person and virtual options for attendees. Sessions will explore how journalism organizations are reimagining their approaches to audience development, product, and work culture while planning for 2022. The event will be held at the Sonesta hotel in the historic Rittenhouse Square section of Philadelphia.
Oct. 14-17: She Podcasts LIVE
This in-person event will bring together women podcasters, audio content creators, and storytellers. Speakers and sessions will cover a wide variety of topics related to the podcast journey, including the launch, building an audience, perfecting content, and self-care. The event will take place in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Oct. 15-17: Journalism & Women Symposium CAMP
This year’s Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) will be online and on-demand. The theme is “Re-emerging and reimagining: What’s next for women in journalism?” Sessions are still being planned, but confirmed speakers include Melody Spann Cooper, chairman and CEO of Chicago’s Midway Broadcasting Corporation, and Deborah Douglas, former JAWS treasurer and new co-editor in chief of The Emancipator.
Oct. 20-23: Global Fact 8
The global fact-checking conference, organized by the International Fact-Checking Network at the Poynter Institute, will be all virtual for the second year in a row. It will bring together fact-checkers, researchers, industry experts, and big tech teams to address misinformation on a global scale. Sessions will cover fact-checker harassment, media literacy, commercializing fact-checking, and more.
Oct. 21: BlogHer Biz
This in-person event will feature an afternoon of networking, educational workshops, and inspirational discussions with today’s top creators and entrepreneurs. It will take place at the 1 Hotel in Brooklyn, New York. If you can’t join in person, the event will also be livestreamed.
Oct. 25-Nov. 19: Trust 101: Earning trust with communities of color
Apply now for this free, four-week class from the Trusting News team. Trusting News is a project from the American Press Institute and the Reynolds Journalism Institute. This course will “identify past and present barriers to trust, work through coverage areas that are often especially problematic, equip you for effective outreach and talk about how to measure your success.” It’s 100% remote and open to local journalists in U.S. newsrooms.
Nov. 1-4: Web Summit | Lisbon
Dubbed “the world’s premier tech conference,” Web Summit brings together the founders and CEOs of tech companies, fast-growing startups, policymakers, and heads of state to ask a simple question: Where to next? The lineup of speakers includes some of the biggest names from companies like Reddit, Black Lives Matter, Spotify, Microsoft, and more. Some of the media- and content-focused sessions include “Setting new news metrics,” “Reporting across borders,” and “At the crossroad of TV and social media.”
Originally planned as an in-person event in Syndey, Australia, GIJC21 will instead be virtual. It will feature panels and workshops on the latest investigative techniques, data analysis, online research, cross-border collaboration, and more by the best journalists in the field. The virtual conference will also provide regional programs and language translations.
Nov. 2-4: Affiliate Summit West
“Imagine a place where advertisers and publishers of all sizes and types come together, to share knowledge and build partnerships so that together they can grow their businesses online…” That’s what attendees will find at Afilliate Summit West, taking place in Las Vegas. Tracks include Content & Commerce, Advertisers, and Innovation & Tech. The event will welcome publishers of all sizes, from mass media to bloggers.
Fall (TBD): Bloggy Conference
2021 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Bloggy Conference. As of now, the plan is to hold the event in Sandusky, Ohio, at Cedar Point. The final agenda and speakers are TBD.
