1. The Best Journalism School in America Is… (PBS MediaShift)

As the Knight Foundation’s Eric Newton writes, “The best journalism school in America is … a mystery. There’s no sensible system for comparing programs or knowing if they are really healthy.” Newton examines the problem and suggests types of data that the journalism education field should start collecting.

2. Getty Images blows the web’s mind by setting 35 million photos free (Nieman Journalism Lab)

This week, Getty Images announced that 35 million of its images can be used for free for editorial/noncommercial purposes. The move is in response to rampant unauthorized use of its images online. However, it comes with some conditions, such as the required use of Getty’s embed code.

3. Bill Keller on philanthropic journalism (WAN-IFRA)

“Journalistic integrity can flourish or suffocate under any of the major business models,” writes Bill Keller. Keller left The New York Times to become The Marshall Project’s editor-in-chief and ponders the financial implications of philanthropic journalism in response to Glenn Greenwald and Mark Ames’ debate over The Intercept.

4. How news outlets can make native ads work for them (Journalism.co.uk)

At the Digital Media Strategies conference in London, News Corporation’s Raju Narisetti and BuzzFeed’s Will Hayward reviewed native advertising best practices and examples of media outlets that leverage newsrooms’ storytelling expertise to produce relevant brand content.

5. Beginner Bloggers Week: Katie180′s success story (ProBlogger)

It was “Beginner Week” over at ProBlogger, which is dedicated to tips and resources for bloggers who are just starting out. Its case study of nutrition and lifestyle blogger Katie 180 shows that preparation before you publish pays off and offers ideas that even a veteran blogger could appreciate.
