Pin it for Later: 5 News Outlets to Follow on Pinterest

Publishers Using Pinterest to Inform Readers

Over the years, Pinterest has proven itself to be more than just a virtual vision board.

Just last month, the social media site made headlines after announcing its decision to direct all vaccine and immunization searches on its site to reliable information from credible health organizations. So it’s clear that the site has evolved to make room for both information-gatherers and inspiration-seeking DIY-ers.

Even publications and news organizations use the site to keep their readers informed and to help inspire readership.

“[Pinterest is] not as ephemeral as something like Twitter,” said Liz Heron, a former social media director, in an interview with Poynter. “And it’s slightly different than other social networking sites because it’s not just about what you want to share and repin; it’s also about what you want to save.”

Take a look at our top five publications to check out on Pinterest:

1. The New York Times

Following The New York Times on Pinterest is sure to inspire no matter what you’re looking to find. It has 179 boards curated by Times editors that cover it all, from beauty and food to politics and book recommendations.

Check out “What We’re Reading” for news stories from all over the web recommended by NYT editors, or “The New York Times Magazine Covers” to check out Times covers from years past.

2. The Wall Street Journal

The WSJ Pinterest is home to 24 boards covering topics like arts, entertainment, fashion, and the economy. The publication even uses the platform to show how it engages with its readers. On “#morningWSJ,” you can find images submitted by WSJ readers after the publication asked them to send in photos from their morning routines.

Check out “WSJ Quotes” for memorable snippets of WSJ stories, or pin a few dot-ink portraits that have appeared in The Wall Street Journal from “WSJ Hedcuts.”

As you can imagine, National Geographic’s Pinterest is full of breathtaking and vibrant photos. In addition to the outlet’s own photos and stories, there are plenty of boards dedicated to photos taken and submitted by readers.

Nat Geo Infographics” is a great place to find great infographics straight from the magazine, and “#lol: Your Shot Photos” is home to some audience-submitted photos taken on World Laughter Day.
