National Portrait Gallery Announces Winners of the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and Opening of ‘The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today’

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery has announced artist Alison Elizabeth Taylor as the first-prize winner of the sixth national Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Her prize-winning artwork “Anthony Cuts under the Williamsburg Bridge, Morning” (2020) depicts Brooklyn, N.Y.-based hair groomer Anthony Payne in a process that Taylor developed and named “marquetry hybrid.” Using vivid paints, inkjet prints, and the natural grains of over 100 veneers, Taylor created the multilayered portrait after encountering Payne, who was offering donation-based haircuts to support Black Lives Matter despite his own workplace having been shuttered by the pandemic.

The first prize portrait will be on view as part of “The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today.” The exhibition will be on view at the Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.April 30 through Feb. 26, 2023, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog.

Planet Fitness Invites High School Teens to Work Out for Free All Summer Long to Improve Their Mental & Physical Health

Planet Fitness, one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers with more members than any other fitness brand, is inviting high schoolers ages 14 – 19 to work out for free at any of its more than 2,200 Planet Fitness locations throughout the U.S. and Canada from May 16 through Aug. 31 as part of the High School Summer Pass initiative.

A national study commissioned by Planet Fitness found that 93% of American teens want to stay healthy and active over the summer months, but many lack motivation or access to do so. High School Summer Pass offers a solution for teenagers eager to stay active when school sports programs, gym classes and after-school activities wind down.

CBS Will Finish the 2021-2022 Season as America’s Most-Watched Network for 14th Straight Year

According to Network research projections, CBS will finish the 2021-2022 season as “America’s Most-Watched Network” in primetime for the 14th straight season. This will be CBS’ 19th win in the last 20 years. The network is also #1 in late night for the sixth consecutive season and in daytime for 36 consecutive years. CBS’ winning season features the top broadcast series/drama (NCIS), top comedy (Young Sheldon), top primetime news program (60 Minutes), top new drama (NCIS: Hawai’i) and top new comedy (Ghosts).

The Network is currently averaging 6.35 million viewers, +100,000 ahead of second-place NBC (versus 6.25m), third-place Fox (4.68m) and ABC (4.19m). All numbers are according to Nielsen’s most current ratings through Sunday, May 1.
