Upcoming Events: February 2023

Hopefully, you have some time on your calendar in the coming weeks because there are a number of upcoming events for journalists and bloggers that might be the perfect fit.

Whether you’re interested in learning about media literacy, legal cases involving freedom of expression, travel blogging, or how to get published in the New York Times, the events in February have you covered.

Feb. 1-3: The Southern C Summit

The Southern C Summit welcomes female entrepreneurs for three days of workshops, mentor sessions, social gatherings, and (back by popular demand) a silent disco. Topics will cover the latest in e-commerce, media, marketing, and more. If you’re passionate about blogging, wellness, fashion, food, art, or media, this is a great event to check out. Both virtual and in-person ticket options are available. The in-person event will take place in Sea Island, Georgia.

Feb. 2: Axios Pro: Media trends that matter in 2023

Axios Pro Media Deals Reporter Tim Baysinger and Axios Senior Media Reporter Sara Fischer will lead this free webinar about forecasted media trends.

Feb. 3-4: Pinners Conference (Kansas)

The first Pinners Conference and Expo of 2023 will offer workshops and classes covering a variety of DIY topics, including glass etching, knitting, candlemaking, makeup tips, cookie decorating, and much more.

Feb. 7: From Surviving To Thriving In A Digital World: A Safer Internet Day Chat

This webinar will be “a conversation about the importance of designing online experiences with kids’ well-being in mind, including providing insights from young people on what they need in order to thrive when their lives are digital by default.” It will be hosted in part by The National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). It will be available on Zoom and Facebook Live.

Feb. 8: Accessibility Professionals Idea Swap

Hosted by the Online News Association, this event is ideal for those looking to make news more accessible. The Zoom meetup will feature fast breakout sessions with product leaders and accessibility advocates. The event is participatory, so come ready with ideas and questions.

Feb. 9: Amicus Curiae Interventions in Freedom of Expression Cases: A UNESCO Guide

This webinar will be hosted by UNESCO and Media Defence. It will be available in English, Spanish, and French. The webinar will present UNESCO’s guide on amicus curiae (or “third party intervener”) in freedom of expression cases, with a focus on the safety of journalists.

Feb. 18-19: Los Angeles Travel Show

Travel writers can head to LA to attend more than 30 sessions to help them “travel like a rockstar.” Hear from travel experts about where to go, what to do, how to get there, and how to save. Sessions covering European travel, yacht cruising, road trips, and ethical travel are just a few of the options available to attendees.

Feb. 27-28: Pubcon Austin

The 21st Pubcon returns to Austin this year after the pandemic threw a wrench in plans in recent years. The internet marketing conference will offer sessions covering topics like conversion optimization, machine learning and search, and AI content generation.

March 2: Tips from A New York Times Editor to Get You Published

Julia Calderone, Senior Editor of NYT’s “Well” section, and NYU adjunct instructor Estelle Erasmus will discuss what it takes to pitch, submit, and get published in the New York Times.

March 2-Oct. 19: Beat Academy

Over the course of eight months, Poynter will offer 18 courses for journalists looking to improve their reporting skills in several emerging coverage areas, including private equity, climate change, crime, and immigration. Attendees can choose the sessions they need or join all 18 expert-led webinars. In addition, some of the workshops include reporting grant opportunities for participating newsrooms.

March 2-3: Tastemaker Conference

This popular food blogger event will take place in Chicago. Attendees will be treated to meals (of course), swag bags, workshops, panels, and food excursions around the amazing Chicago food scene. Sessions will cover photography, tips for repurposing content, DEI for content, and more. Attendees will also receive a free media ticket to The Inspired Home Show, which takes place March 4-7.

March 2-5: NICAR 2023

The 2023 data journalism conference will take place in Nashville, Tenn. The event will “offer a mix of panels, demos, discussions, networking, and hands-on data training.” Session topics include mass records requests, mapping data analysis, a spreadsheets crash course, data journalism in sports, and more. Idea submissions for the popular Lightning Talks will be accepted until Feb. 5.

March 2-4: WORKBENCHcon

WORKBENCHcon is a “growing network of diyers, makers, influencers & bloggers discovering new techniques, products and skills all while learning how to take their businesses to the next level.” Sessions will cover topics like YouTube channel optimization, photography, and blog monetization, with more to come. It will be held in Atlanta.

March 3-5: Women’s Travel Fest

The tenth annual Travel Fest will return to New York City. Virtual tickets are available and include recordings of the weekend’s sessions. In addition to an NYC walking and food tour, the session schedule includes workshops on publishing a travel memoir, starting a travel podcast, safety tips for solo travelers, and more.
