15 Events for Journalists and Bloggers to Attend in March

March 2: Tips from A New York Times Editor to Get You Published

Julia Calderone, Senior Editor of NYT’s “Well” section, and NYU adjunct instructor Estelle Erasmus will discuss what it takes to pitch, submit, and get published in the New York Times.

March 2: Psychological Safety Training For Women And Nonbinary Journalists

This interactive, virtual session will be co-sponsored by the Overseas Press Club and the International Women’s Media Foundation. The presentation and training will be led by Ana Zellhuber, a psychoanalyst and Emergency Psychology specialist based in Mexico City. Freelance writers, editors, and visual producers are invited to attend.

March 2-Oct. 19: Beat Academy

Over the course of eight months, Poynter will offer 18 courses for journalists looking to improve their reporting skills in several emerging coverage areas, including private equity, climate change, crime, and immigration. Attendees can choose the sessions they need or join all 18 expert-led webinars. In addition, some of the workshops include reporting grant opportunities for participating newsrooms.

March 2-3: Tastemaker Conference

This popular food blogger event will take place in Chicago. Attendees will be treated to meals (of course), swag bags, workshops, panels, and food excursions around the amazing Chicago food scene. Sessions will cover photography, tips for repurposing content, DEI for content, and more. Attendees will also receive a free media ticket to The Inspired Home Show, which takes place March 4-7.

March 2-5: NICAR 2023

The 2023 data journalism conference will take place in Nashville, Tenn. The event will “offer a mix of panels, demos, discussions, networking, and hands-on data training.” Session topics include mass records requests, mapping data analysis, a spreadsheets crash course, data journalism in sports, and more.

March 2-4: WORKBENCHcon

WORKBENCHcon is a “growing network of diyers, makers, influencers & bloggers discovering new techniques, products and skills all while learning how to take their businesses to the next level.” Sessions will cover topics like YouTube channel optimization, photography, and blog monetization, with more to come. It will be held in Atlanta.

March 3-5: Women’s Travel Fest

The tenth annual Travel Fest will return to New York City. Virtual tickets are available and include recordings of the weekend’s sessions. In addition to an NYC walking and food tour, the session schedule includes workshops on publishing a travel memoir, starting a travel podcast, safety tips for solo travelers, and more.

March 7-10: Podcast Movement | Evolutions

Podcasters and industry professionals from around the world will attend Evolutions to network, learn about the latest developments in podcasting, and more. Tracks are available for active podcasters, industry professionals, and beginner/aspiring podcasters. Evolutions will be held at the Westgate Resort in Las Vegas.

March 9: ONA Career Day

These free, virtual event hosted by the Online News Association is open to journalism job, higher ed, and fellowship opportunity seekers. Educational sessions around career development will be available and attendees can share their resumes with recruiters ahead of time.

March 12-15: Alt Summit

Thousands of women entrepreneurs and influencers will head to Palm Springs for this year’s Alt Summit, where “incredible things happen.” Arts and crafts demos, tips for success on Instagram, and a session on how to monetize your blog are just a few of the numerous sessions that will be available to attendees.

March 15: Smartocto: Explaining the User Needs Model 2.0

Smartocto, an editorial analytics company, will host this webinar to dive into its updated model 2.0 and how it will change the editor’s workflow. Attendees will learn about the new user needs added to the model and decide if the tool is a good fit for their newsroom.

March 24-25: Pinners Conference & Expo (Atlanta)

This event will feature 108 creative classes for bloggers focused on crafting and DIY. Macrame, resin, candle making, and bath bomb creation are just a few of the many workshops offered.

March 27-29: Digiday Publishing Summit

Publishers will head to Vail, Colorado, to “hear from media execs about how they’re attempting to grow their companies in a lean time and walk away from this event with a better understanding of how other media organizations are building a more sustainable future.” Speakers from BuzzFeed, Meredith Dotdash, theSkimm, and more are on the schedule. Among the session topics: e-commerce, crypto, dynamic paywalls, and newsletters.

March 30: Diverse Women in Media Forum

This member-exclusive event is hosted by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. At the forum, “attendees will learn from trailblazing industry women leaders, learn from sessions and workshops to come away with fresh ideas and connections to influence the future of women in media.” The event will take place in Los Angeles.

April: AP Stylebook Workshop

This is a four-week online workshop (Tuesdays from 11-11:45 a.m. EDT) designed to boost attendees’ AP Stylebook knowledge. In addition to improving your writing skills and consistency, you’ll also learn about the how and why of AP Style and develop skills to navigate the Stylebook quickly. Sessions will cover the importance of word choice, inclusive storytelling, and real-life language challenges submitted by attendees.
