June 6: Behind the data: Welcoming AI into the newsroom

From automated news writing to personalized content recommendations, AI has the potential to transform the way news is produced, distributed, and consumed. What does this look like, and how can the media ensure that AI is used responsibly? In this webinar from smartocto, attendees will be guided through a comprehensive exploration of the latest trends and applications of AI in the newsroom. With a focus on smartocto’s use of ChatGPT to provide valuable insights into company data, attendees will gain practical advice on how to harness the power of AI to drive their own journalistic practices forward.

June 8: Build and Monetize Your Own Newsletter

This one-hour webinar from The Writers’ Co-op is perfect for any freelancers or staffed journalists who are “newsletter curious.” Freelance journalists Chris La Tray and Melinda Wenner Moyer will share how they developed their own newsletters, including the ins and outs of identifying their target audience and treating the newsletter as a business.

June 13-15: ASJA Annual Conference

The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) asks writers to think differently. The theme of reconsidering what freelancers, authors, and other writers do and how we do it shows up in conference keynote talks, sessions on books, journalism, and content marketing writing, informal snack chats, and virtual happy hours. See the full schedule and speaker lineup here.

The conference is open to nonmembers as well as members and registration will remain open through June 9. Scholarships are available for freelancers and students from historically underrepresented communities.

June 22-25: 2023 IRE Conference

With nearly 200 sessions to choose from, attendees of IRE’s annual investigative journalism conference are bound to find something that fits their needs. Data visualization, election reporting, investigative interviewing, and reporting on law enforcement are just a few of the topics that will be covered. The event will take place in Orlando, Florida.

June 28-30: GlobalFact 10

The 10th Global Fact-Checking Summit will be a hybrid event, with in-person portions taking place in Seoul, South Korea. GlobalFact 10 aims to “mobilize the collective power of truth, transparency and accountability as a counteroffensive to the rash of misinformation that’s challenging citizens across the world.” Attendees will learn about the latest industry trends and fact-checking best practices, and will hear from the world’s top journalists, academics, and fact-checkers. Topics will cover misinformation, media literacy, online harassment, and more.

July 14-15: NAMLE Conference

The National Association for Media Literacy’s (NAMLE) annual conference provides valuable resources, technology, teacher practice and pedagogy, assessments, and core concepts of media literacy education. The virtual event is open to educators, practitioners, scholars, and concerned citizens alike.
