February is packed with unique events for writers to hone their skills. Check out the calendar below and see which one fits your needs. The events cover a variety of topics, from climate journalism to election reporting, travel writing, press freedom, and more.

Feb. 1-Sept. 26: Poynter Beat Academy

Register now for Poynter’s Beat Academy, a webinar series kicking off in February that “equips journalists with beat expertise, data know-how and excellent local and national sources.” Attend all or some of the weekly webinars, which will cover timely topics like climate change, the presidential election, transgender medical care, and the economy.

Feb. 2-3: Pinners Conference and Expo (Overland Park, KS)

DIY and craft bloggers will head to the first Pinners Conference of the year to learn from more than 100 workshops and browse the expansive expo floor. So far, the packed schedule of classes covers crafts like hand knitting, glass etching, macrame, sourdough 101, air fryer tips, and more.

Feb. 6: The Investigative Agenda for Climate Change Journalism

This webinar from the Global Investigative Journalism Network will bring together journalists to share ideas, strategies, and techniques for covering the climate crisis. A panel of journalists and experts will discuss the top priorities for investigative journalism on climate change, including the fossil fuel industry, government policies, climate change finance, and more. The webinar will be in English but will also be available in Arabic, French, and Spanish.

Feb. 7: Election data: Before Election Night, During and After

This is a free webinar from Investigative Reporters and Editors that is exclusive to IRE members. Election specialists from the AP, Texas Tribune, and Star Tribune will discuss their approaches to election storytelling, including explainers, dashboards, and post-election visual analysis.

Feb. 16-19: Women’s Travel Fest

In 2024, the annual Travel Fest will be headed to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The weekend retreat will feature curated talks, workshops, community exercises, and mindful practices for travel lovers and content creators. Sessions will cover video creation for social media, traveling (almost) free with credit card points, how to travel with a full-time job, train travel, and much more.

Feb. 22-25: IDEA Health and Fitness Summit

This event is a great option for fitness bloggers and vloggers. They can connect with other personal trainers, entrepreneurs, and business owners and learn new strategies to create change and get noticed in a crowded marketplace. Topics cover training techniques, nutrition, training science, and professional development.

Feb. 29-March 2: WORKBENCHcon

WORKBENCHcon is a “growing network of diyers, makers, influencers & bloggers discovering new techniques, products and skills all while learning how to take their businesses to the next level.” Sessions will cover topics like techniques for using tools and new equipment, skills for video production, and business practices for the content creator, with more to come. WORKBENCHcon will be held in Atlanta.

Feb. 29: Voices at Risk: Journalist Safety and Press Freedom during the Super-Election Year

More than 40 countries, representing more than 40% of the world’s population, are holding national elections in 2024 and journalists face serious risks as they work to cover the elections. This webinar from Media Defence and the International Women’s Media Foundation aims to “increase awareness of journalist safety during elections and emphasize how media workers are at the forefront of the struggle for democracy.”

Coming in March…

March 7-9: ACP Spring National College Media Conference

The Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) will bring together collegiate journalists and advisers from across California and the nation for a weekend full of helpful sessions, critiques, advice, and feedback. In addition to coverage of the fundamentals, the event will also dive into the fast-changing environment of collegiate journalism and media. Attendees will head to beautiful La Jolla, California, for the conference.

March 7-10: NICAR 2024

IRE & NICAR will host the annual data journalism conference in Baltimore, Maryland. More than 175 sessions will fill the weekend, with topics including AI tools for data journalists, how to interpret weather data, Google Sheets best practices, coding tips, and much more. Several networking sessions will also be available to help student journalists, LGBTQIA reporters, international reporters, women in media, and journalists of color connect with their peers.
