Upcoming Events, March 2024

Spring is in the air and we have a new batch of unique events for journalists and bloggers to freshen up your calendar for March.

The webinars and conferences will cover topics like service journalism, college media, food blogging, election reporting, and even a special photography event for those looking to capture the solar eclipse in April.

Let’s dive in.

March Events

March 4: What is service journalism and how do I do it right?

Join Tim Herrera, former editor of The New York Times’s service journalism desk Smarter Living, for a workshop on finding, reporting, writing, and pitching better service stories.

March 7-9: ACP Spring National College Media Conference

The Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) will bring together collegiate journalists and advisers from across California and the nation for a weekend full of helpful sessions, critiques, advice and feedback. In addition to coverage of the fundamentals, the event will also dive into the fast-changing environment of collegiate journalism and media. Attendees will head to beautiful La Jolla, California, for the conference.

March 7-10: NICAR 2024

IRE & NICAR will host the annual data journalism conference in Baltimore, Maryland. More than 175 sessions will fill the weekend, with topics including AI tools for data journalists, how to interpret weather data, Google Sheets best practices, coding tips and much more. Several networking sessions will also be available to help student journalists, LGBTQIA reporters, international reporters, women in media and journalists of color connect with their peers.

March 8-16: SXSW

SXSW will welcome a diverse group of innovators, storytellers, humanitarians and global thought leaders back to Austin, Texas, for nine days of collaboration. AI, climate change, civic engagement, and film and TV are just a few of the dozens of tracks available to attendees.

March 13-16: Tastemaker Conference

This popular food blogger event will take place in Chicago. Attendees will be treated to meals (of course), swag bags, workshops, panels and food excursions around the amazing Chicago food scene. Sessions will cover SEO, DEI, content creation, revenue growth and more helpful topics for food bloggers.

March 17-20: Alt Summit

Head to Palm Springs for the 2024 Alt Summit, which brings together thousands of women influencers and entrepreneurs and provides a “physical gathering place for that community and then incredible things happen.” Sessions will cover social media best practices, steps for building a personal brand, legal issues for influencers and more.

March 20: AI + Fact-Checking in an Election Year

This Zoom meetup from ONA will test out new AI tools designed to fact-check images, video and news articles. Attendees will complete exercises on how to use them and discover ways to use them to keep their communities informed about the election. Tickets are $25 or free for ONA members.

March 27: AP Photography Showcase: Capturing the Solar Eclipse

The solar eclipse on April 8 will be the last one for the next two decades, so you better get a good photo of it. During this webcast, an AP photographer will look at past eclipse photos and discuss how they were captured. The event is open to professional photographers and hobbyists and will include a Q&A session.

Coming in April…
