How is it already March?! As you head into a new month, check for opportunities to hone your skills, network and hear about the latest trends in the media industry. This month’s journalist events cover topics like data journalism, publishing your first book, AI prompt writing and public health journalism.

March 6-8: ACP Spring National College Media Conference

The Associated College Press (ACP) is heading to Long Beach, California, for its Spring National College Media Conference. The event provides collegiate journalists and advisers with helpful sessions, critiques, advice and feedback. “With dozens of learning sessions from experienced journalism professionals and advisers, the conference gives you that much-needed boost to conclude the academic year and prepare you for what’s ahead.”

March 6-9: NICAR 2025

The 2025 data journalism conference will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The event will offer “everything from the basics on using spreadsheets, databases and online mapping to data visualization and the latest technological advances.” The schedule features nearly 200 sessions, including “Beginner track: New to data journalism,” “Coaching ChatGPT to help with coding and data tasks,” “Python for data analysis,” “Updating data practices for inclusion” and much more.

March 7-8: Pinners Conference & Expo (Utah)

DIYers and craft bloggers will head to St. George, Utah, for this event featuring over 100 hands-on Pinterest-based classes. If you write about DIY, crafts, cooking, self-improvement, photography, party planning, scrapbooking, holidays, beauty or fashion, add the Pinners event to your calendar!

March 7-9: IDEA Health and Fitness Summit

This event is a great option for fitness bloggers and vloggers. They can connect with other personal trainers, entrepreneurs and business owners and learn new strategies to create change and get noticed in a crowded marketplace. Topics cover training techniques, nutrition, training science and professional development. The 2025 event will take place in Denver, Colorado.

March 7-15: SXSW

SXSW will welcome a diverse group of innovators, storytellers, humanitarians, and global thought leaders back to Austin, Texas, for 9 days of collaboration. AI, climate change, civic engagement, the creator economy and startups are just a few of the 23 curated tracks available to attendees.

March 14-17: Alt Summit

Head to Palm Springs for the 2025 Alt Summit, which brings together thousands of women influencers and entrepreneurs and provides a “physical gathering place for that community and then incredible things happen.” The schedule includes sessions on social media, content monetization, audience building and more.

March 18: Going From A Beat to A Book

Making the jump from beat reporter to published book author can be daunting. During this session from The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW), seasoned journalists who have successfully transformed their beats into published books – including journalists from the New York Times, Forbes and Vanity Fair – will share their insights, strategies and lessons learned.

March 19: Advanced Prompt Writing for AI

Register now for this hour-long virtual session from the Online News Association. In addition to reviewing prompt-writing fundamentals, attendees will learn how to write prompts for MidJourney, DALL-E and the LLMs to build a no-code website.

March 19-20: Sunshine Fest

This in-person conference is designed to “find solutions to pressing problems in freedom of information across all disciplinary and geographic boundaries.” Attendees – including journalists, record custodians, policy makers, historians, state FOI coalitions, librarians, academics, and more – will form an action plan to implement after the event. It will take place in Washington, D.C., during National Sunshine Week.

March 25: Public Health Journalism: Covering public health policy in the current political landscape

This webinar is part of the National Press Club Journalism Institute’s public health journalism training series. Learn how to adapt to new challenges in reporting on public health policy, especially as some traditional sources of vital information have become unavailable in wide swaths or made more difficult to access. Registration for these programs is free and open to the public.

Coming in April…

April 1-10: What journalism can teach you about effective communication

This four-part course from the Associated Press will show how effective writing can lead to better outcomes. The actionable tools, tips and feedback will benefit writers of all skill levels as you dive into journalism principles, craft your own story using the fundamentals and network with your peers.

April 9: Mini-Lab: Advanced Prompt Writing

ONA will put on this 45-minute lab where attendees will design a no-code website using AI and use tools to test the code for malware. Participants will be given a handout with links to all the prompt templates.

April 9-13: International Journalism Festival

Perugia, Italy, will again host the International Journalism Festival, the largest annual media event in Europe. The schedule is full of sessions on topics like AI, climate, local news, press freedom, investigative journalism and much more.
