1. What Data Journalists Need to Do Differently (Harvard Business Review)
The recent launch of several “data journalism” and “explanatory journalism” sites has placed data and the media’s use of it under the microscope. Although there are excellent reasons to use data in your reporting, the Harvard Business Review cautions that data journalism has its limits, especially when it comes to how journalists are sourcing information.
2. Why Many Journalists Make Poor Newsroom Leaders (American Journalism Review)
“For all the things American journalism does well, it continues to routinely struggle – even at its top levels – in recruiting, developing and nurturing great editors and managers,” writes Carl Sessions Stepp, a University of Maryland journalism professor, former reporter and editor, and author of “Editing for Today’s Newsroom.” In the wake of The New York Times’ ongoing changes, he suggests steps that all newsrooms can take to develop leaders.

4. Poynter President Outlines New Strategic Direction (Poynter)
When the Poynter Institute’s new president, Tim Franklin, started on Feb. 10, he gave himself 100 days to study and develop a new vision for the organization. He presented that vision earlier this week, which includes more international teaching, an improved online presence, and new revenue opportunities. The Poynter site outlines Franklin’s full report, as well as faculty and staff’s thoughts on the plan.
5. What Newsroom Spaces Tell Us About the Future of Digital Journalism (PBS MediaShift)
When it comes to journalism’s future, our focus tends to shift to the tools we’re using, the people who manage us, and whether or not they need to change. The first four articles in this week’s Around the Wire are examples of that. But what about the spaces where journalists are doing their work?
Nikki Usher, a Tow Center Fellow and assistant professor of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, has researched how the design and layout of a newsroom impacts morale, workflow, and cross-beat communication.
