Iconic Bel Air Estate Introduced to the Market for the First Time in 30 Years for $350 Million by Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, Hilton & Hyland, and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services
Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, Hilton & Hyland, and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services announced on Aug. 7 the iconic estate, known as Chartwell and the crown jewel of Bel Air, totaling more than 10.3 acres in one of the nation’s most coveted and elite enclaves, will be introduced to the market at $350 million. Built in 1933 by architect Sumner Spaulding, the residence was enhanced and restored under the direction of the recently deceased owner, A. Jerrold Perenchio, after he purchased the estate in 1986. Perenchio engaged renowned designer Henri Samuel, known for his work on estates owned by the Vanderbilts, Rothschilds, and Valentino, to redesign Chartwell. Over the subsequent 30 years’ adjacent properties were acquired to expand the estate, including a Wallace Neff guest house and a long private driveway. Inspired by 18th century French neoclassical design, the main residence is approximately 25,000 square feet in size and poised for entertaining in grand style.
Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. signed an agreement on Aug. 4 to enter a business and capital alliance, with the aim of further strengthening their lasting partnership. The agreement is a testament to the positive result of two years of collaborative and deliberate discussions between the two companies, and it is a milestone in the journey to further strengthen and accelerate the partnership in a sustainable way. Specifically, the companies agreed to 1) establish a joint venture that produces vehicles in the U.S.; 2) jointly develop technologies for electric vehicles; 3) jointly develop connected-car technology; 4) collaborate on advanced safety technologies; and 5) expand complementary products.
Following the close of the first half of the year on June 30, Sotheby’s conducted a review of works sold by Sotheby’s and Christie’s at auction during the period. According to Sotheby’s Mei Moses database, the average compound annual return (CAR) on art sold at auction in the first half of 2017 remained consistent compared to prior year, the first period of stabilization since 2011. Conversely, the average compound annual return on contemporary art sold in the first half of 2017 accelerated sharply compared to the same period in 2016 from an average of 7.4% to 9% (median: from 6.4% to 7%). Artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem de Kooning, and Josef Albers posted particularly strong results above the average return.
Remodelista.com, the go-to home interior and renovation website for home design enthusiasts and professionals, and its sister website Gardenista.com, announced on Aug. 8 the champions of their annual Considered Design Awards contest, which honor the year’s greatest triumphs of home and garden design prowess and remodeling ingenuity. In honor of Smokey Bear’s 73rd birthday the Ad Council, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters launched new digital-first videos and artwork inspired by beloved Smokey Bear posters to raise awareness of lesser known wildfire starts in an effort to decrease human-caused wildfires. The new artwork was created by Brian Edward Miller, Evan Hecox, Janna Mattia and Victoria Ying, portraying Smokey Bear in each of their unique styles.
